Author Interview: Therapeutic Answers to Common Yoga Pose Questions | Jaimie Perkunas

Jaimie Perkunas

Jaimie Perkunas is one of Tucson’s most qualified yoga instructors. Her book, Therapeutic Answers to Common Yoga Pose Questions, is one every yoga teacher should have. She has her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and is a certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).

In 2014 she opened Yoga is Therapy to provide a safe space for students of all physical abilities to practice yoga.

Since I practice physical therapy, I attract students who have a history of injuries, surgeries or age-related changes and who are interested in learning how to do yoga safely in their unique body.

What is Therapeutic Answers to Common Yoga Pose Questions about?

This book is a collection of questions that yoga students and clients have asked me throughout the years. The book is divided into three sections: Lower Body, Upper Body, and Posture and Spine.

Who should read it?

Yoga students, yoga teachers and healthcare providers who are interested in how yoga is therapeutic. Anyone who is curious about yoga and yoga as therapy will also find this book helpful.

What was your reason for writing it?

I have been writing a monthly newsletter since June 2012. Each month I included answers to questions from students. People would often ask me a question that I had already answered. To be honest, I got tired of searching for the answers and decided to create a book of the Q&As.

What is one thing you hope people take away from reading your book?

That anyone can participate in yoga as long as they know how to modify or adapt it for their specific conditions. I also hope people become more interested in their muscles and how stretching and strengthening muscles can change postural and structural patterns.

Do you have plans for another book?

Yes, I have plans. Now it is just a matter of setting aside time for writing. I would like to write another book about body awareness including techniques and stories from my own yoga and physical practice. I am still in the brainstorming stage.
